From May 17 to May 22, the friars of the Province of St. Mary will be gathering for their provincial chapter, an assembly that occurs every three years. The provincial chapter is the highest governing authority in a province. The Constitutions of the Capuchin Friars Minor states, "In a provincial chapter, whether ordinary or extraordinary, matters relating to the life and activity of the province and of the custody are discussed, concerning which all the brothers are to be consulted beforehand" (129:4).
At an ordinary provincial chapter, the friars hold elections, choosing from among the friars a provincial minister and four provincial councilors. They can also vote on proposals pertaining to various aspects of the life and work of the friars.
During their week together, the friars will hear reports from their fellow brothers about the overall state of the province, its ministries, its international missions, its vocations and formation programs, its financial stewardship, and most importantly the quality of fraternal life. It is a time for dialogue and for listening. It is a time for decision making, too. We will be setting a course for the life and mission of the Province, but the Holy Spirit is in charge of this gathering!
Above all, a provincial chapter is a time for renewal. It is an opportunity for the friars and their fraternities to experience rejuvenation as they reclaim the charisms of their founder, St. Francis of Assisi. Prayer and worship will punctuate all that we say and do during this assembly. Please pray for the friars, that our provincial chapter is a Pentecost moment for us, the Capuchin Order, and for the Church we serve.
From a prayer for our provincial chapter:
"We ask for your courage to respond faithfully to accomplish Your will for the future of the Province of St. Mary, the Capuchin Order, and the entire community of faith. Through your grace, may these days of preparation be a time for prayerful renewal and fraternal connection so that we can grow ever closer to You as we live in your perfect Trinity and simple Unity, you who are glorified as God Almighty, forever and ever. Amen.
"Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us."
