Every year on June 23, the people of Okin
awa, Japan, hold a day of prayer and pilgrimage for peace. This year is the 80th anniversary of the end of the Battle of Okinawa. Twelve Catholic bishops from other parts of Japan joined Bishop Wayne Berndt for a Mass for peace in the Capuchins’ Naha parish. This was followed by a 10-mile pilgrimage to the southern end of the island, following the route the civilian refugees followed trying to escape the deadly crossfire of the opposing armies. There were pauses along the way for prayer and the reading of experiences of some of the refugees.
