Fr. Samuel Fuller has been fashioning clay sculptures for nearly 50 years. He is currently showing a new piece, titled “Give Us This Day,” at the Monastery Gallery of Art at the Holy Family Passionist Retreat Center in West Hartford, Conn. And he has been invited to have a one-person show of his sculpture at the Monastery Gallery of Art in autumn 2026.
Father Sam describes his new sculpture as follows. “The piece conveys all that a day can hold—its ups and downs, unexpected surges, turmoil, unanticipated desires and resolutions, twists and turns. All of this in the face of an openness, honesty, vulnerability, and versatility. Beneath all of what seems to be fragmentation and cacophony is an abiding presence, which expresses poignancy conveyed not through one event, but a centering and still point which lifts up all to gift. At first, I had thought of a title such as ‘It Happened That Day’ or ‘All in a Day,’ but after a process of discernment, clarity emerged in the same sense of bringing the piece to completion. The title of ‘Give Us This Day’ came to the fore, and I realized that as prayer is the basis of my work, so this title matched the actuality of this piece.”
